In Chinese, there is a saying that “history is a ceaseless, drizzling rain.” Within this rain, many cultural imprints have been gradually washed away by the tides of progress—especially through contemporary urbanization. In Yunnan, I encountered the traditional Bai embroidery once made by local women. Yet, as rural brain drain and youth migration accelerate, elders told me that this craft now stands on the brink of disappearance.
Reflecting on the cultural heritages sacrificed to urban development, I knitted the traditional Bai pattern “DaBagua” into a necklace. Its wavy, blue backbone represents the rain of history and forms a Möbius loop, symbolizing the endless cycle of change and continuity. The DaBagua motif, woven in vivid green, orange, and pink beads, merges into this rain—its colors fading at the back, as though partially washed away.
Through this interplay between the enduring rain and the dissolving pattern, I hope to honor and preserve the cultural legacies that, though often lost to history, remain intrinsic to our civilization and continue to shape it today. With care and remembrance, they can be woven even deeper into our collective identity.
